The Tree of Life

I encourage everyone to read the Bible. There are so many things you can learn hidden in all the details and parts. Some pastors look at how certain words are arranged and what they imply. Some look at the context from which the writer wrote it originally. Some check the origin of the words.

One thing for sure, the Bible covers important areas of life and you won't run out of hidden secrets and knowledge which Christ said is in Him (Colossians 2:3).

God never has writer's block for sure. He does not run out of things to show us or experiences to share. Amazing!

My personal takeaway from my quiet time this morning is about the Tree of Life.

There was a tree of life in the Garden of Eden when God first made the Earth, before Adam and Eve sinned and were expelled from it (Genesis 2:9; Genesis 3:22,24). The tree of life according to the passage when one eats of it, he or she will live forever. But since the "wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23), Adam who sinned cannot go near it anymore.

The fun part of my quiet time this morning is another reference to the Tree of Life in Revelation 22 when God has already resurrected the lives of his saints. Verse 1 to 5 reads:

"Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever."

What does this passage mean for me?

1. God provided the tree of life in the beginning. He wanted us to live provided for and in unbroken fellowship with him from the start (Genesis 2:9). We hear from God and we know our purpose and our calling.

2. God had a cherubim guard the tree of life after man sinned (Genesis 3:24). Sin separated us from God and so the fruits of an unbroken relationship with God also were lost to man. Man lost his default relationship with God, his purpose (to bring glory to God and reign according to God's desires), and his provision in the Garden of Eden. Man dies and is lost for all eternity without God in his life.

Man does not have access to God again because man is sinful and so true worship is impossible unless God provides a way to it.

3. God makes a reference to the tree of life in the new heaven and earth that He has planned. Through Christ, man's relationship with God is restored and he now has the right to the tree of life - eternal life in fellowship with God and his original purpose and perfect, without sin.

"To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God." (Revelation 2:7)

"Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city." (Revelation 22:14)
