Crab Mentality

I'm not sure if this will be relevant to someone today. I just want to share this verse from James 3:16:

"For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."

Barnes' Notes on the Bible says it well.

"For where envying and strife is, there is confusion  - margin, tumult or unquietness. Everything is unsettled and agitated. There is no mutual confidence; there is no union of plan and effort; there is no co-operation in promoting a common object; there is no stability in any plan; for a purpose, though for good, formed by one portion, is defeated by another."

"All love and harmony of course are banished; all happiness disappears; all prosperity is at an end. In place of the peaceful virtues which ought to prevail, there springs up every evil passion that tends to mar the peace of a community. Where this spirit prevails in a church, it is of course impossible to expect any progress in divine things; and in such a church any effort to do good is vain."

Filipinos have a negative culture trait they call "crab mentality" which is the nature of crabs to pull down any crab that's trying to get up. Filipinos are much aware of the negative nature of this trait. I think James 3:16 gives us better insight as to the root cause of this nature - envy and selfish ambition - among other things.

I think we have come a long way but there's still work to do.

The opposite nature is to lead from the ground up by lifting others. Philippians 2:3:

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves."

"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant," (Matthew 20:26)

The opposite is to be at the bottom lifting people up or at the top reaching down to lift people up. Now what animal does that? Can we replace crab mentality with another animal mentality?

How about the Jesus mentality?

  1. This was a post almost 7 years ago yet I can definitely relate on this. I am looking for verses that would depict crab mentality issues I think not only in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world, as I consider us all to be naturally born sinners. I appreciate this a lot as it reminds me not to mind those who pull us down yet to be aware of them and mark them, though I need to still love the unlovable so I could extend the grace I have also received from our Lord. Thank you for this! Shalom!
