Different Ways People Receive God's Word

Yesterday, during our small group we discussed the Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15). Normally, this parable pertains to how the Word of God turns people into new believers. However, this parable could also be considered for believers in the faith and their response to the Word of God.

The first group hear the Word, but doubt and unbelief keep them from receiving it. Have you had some doubt in God or doubt in the Word? Test where your doubt is coming from. It may be mistrust, other underlying beliefs in the past or a stronghold that keeps you from receiving God's Word.

The next group did receive the Word but were not able to grow their roots. It can mean that the Word of God was received intellectually though it has not penetrated the heart. These group of people sometimes I can identify with. A Christian author on Hearing the Voice of God said that you have to meditate on God's Word. It's not just hearing but actually meditating on the Word and how the Word applies to your own situation, such that you are ready to obey what it says.

The third group did hear, but the worries of this life, riches, pleasures and other priorities drown the Word in their life. They have other priorities that God is not the first. Hence, His Word takes a backseat as these brothers and sisters in Christ try to maneuver their own lives, without Christ at the center still.

The fourth group of people not only hear and believe, but they also apply the Word to their lives and do what the Word says. As a result, they are able to produce good fruit, the blessings of following God and His Word.

This parable is interesting if seen again in a new view, and by its application provide us with a new perspective as well. It is a delight to hear from God and His Word.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, may you give us a love for you and a new love for your Word. Give us the obedience we need to follow through on what we hear, and continue the race that you have called for us. We ask this in Jesus Name. Amen.
